The Fairground Organ: Its Music, Mechanism and History
Revised Edition
Eric V. Cockayne
This is a hard-back publication written by the late Eric V. Cockayne, one of the founding Trustees of the Organ Theatre.
Eric found that very little information was available in print on the subject and subsequently, after years of research, produced a book in 1970, followed by an unaltered reprint in 1974.
Eric planned to produce a revised edition of the book but his poor health prevented this and he sadly died on November 25th 1990. Eventually, as per Eric's wishes, the revisions were completed by Peter Craig, a mechanical organ owner and member of the St. Albans Musical Museum Society, and the new edition was published by the Society.
The contents of the book are covered over 8 chapters as follows:-
- Music:- The barrel; the cardboard book; the paper roll.
- The pneumatic system:- The basis; motive power; wind supply; wind-chests.
- Key Frames and Tracker Bars:- Barrel organ key frame; book organ keyframe; tracker bar.
- Registers:- Controls in the music; register relay box; sliders and air valves.
- Pipework - Percussions - Prosceniums:- Flues; reeds; percussion effects; prosceniums.
- Organ Scales:- 45 key barrel organ; 46-48 key Gavioli; 52 key Ruth; 65 key Gavioli; 69 key WurliTzer band organ (86, 87, 89, 92, 94 & 98 key); 100 key Marenghi; 110 key Gavioli ; 70 key Hooghuys; 97 key Mortier.
- Tuning
- A Short History:- The early years; the coming of the bioscope and book organ; the peak of the bioscope era; the slow decline; the link with the past.
The book contains numerous photographs and Eric's line drawings that describe and explain the various mechanisms within the organ.
There is also an appendix by Mr. Ronald Leach, ARIBA, M Inst RA, covering restoration techniques, releathering and adjustments of organs.
